BYZANTION, THE LEGENDARY CITY OF KING BYZAS

Zeus involument in the establishment legend, has given the city the reputation of being ‘’God’s Residence”. One can not imagine such an old settlement with many a past history, to miss the chances of a legend, or episode. According to a favorite legend: God Zeus beloved, sister Io was turned to a cow, saving her from Hera’s jealousy. During her escapement from Hera, she’s given birth to a daughter within the golden-Horn, she named ‘’Kereossa”. She, grew up to marry the sea-god Poseidon, and has given birth to a baby-boy they named ‘’Byzas”.

At the top and bottom of our design one finds the ‘’heads and tails” section of a coin originating from Byzas period. Whereas, the motif named ‘’zencerek”, kind of a dovetail, decorating the four corners, is a motif widely used in Roman and Byzantine floor and wall mosaics.
